it's the black and white ones i want most tho .... they're safe ....
When they're nearly ready, the day before you're going to pick them
They leave the blackcurrants alone here - but the red ones have disappeared completely.

Strangely they've had my black currants this year but left most of the red ones. They always ignore the white ones but they're the ones I never want as much, still gave about 6lbs of them in the freezer from last year that I never worked out what to do with . With regards telling when they're ripe, I base it on the colour and feel, when they look right I guess.

My blackcurrants went from green to purple to black, but even then they were not ripe. It wasn't till they went soft to the touch that they were nice and sweet and tasty. Following advice here I leant to pick by gently fondling each berry, and only picking those that were slightly soft. Luckily my currants were big ones. Commercial growers pick redcurrants when they are not ripe. It might be a pain to pick individually, but the flavour makes it worthwhile. I'd never realised currants can be sweet and eaten like sweets.
Blackbirds leant to get under my fruit net, and got the small number of unpicked ones, so next year I will weigh the edges down with bricks. The number of birds I've had to release from the netting, they'd make a very big pie. It is usually the young ones that get caught.
Just because the birds are eating your currants doesn't mean they are ripe, just that the birds fancy them. Best test for ripeness is to taste a few. At this time of year though my currants, White and red, are ready for eating.
Well the birds stripped all the redcurrants not long after asking on here - they got through or under the netting
I tasted a couple of blackcurrants and whitecurrants, picked the whole lot
Job done ...
Just picked all of my blackcurrants and remaining red currants, the blackcurrants were falling off, so very ripe, and a very messy job picking them. Not as any as last year for some reason. They are in a fruit cage, so birds couldn't get them.
I just picked some blackcurrants in my garden today..They looked like they were ready to eat but they tasted bitter..can anyone tell me when they will be ready to eat?

They are quite sour, I don't like them raw even when really ripe. If they're soft and juicy then they're ripe.
