Behind our houses is a tall tree which produces cherry sized fruits every year. They are smooth and yellow. I was always told they are greengages but am now thinking it might be a Mirabelle Plum. Can anyone confirm this and if so can I make something with them?

Oh yum!!!
I had to leave mine on my lottie
I'm hoping to get a yellow and a red one this autumn!
I just ate mine- or froze them for crumbles ( wasn't a huge tree)
My greengage goes yellowy/green when very ripe- and the fruit size is about the same as if you make a circle with the tip of your thumb and 1st finger!
Mirabelles are smaller.
Lucky you!!!!"Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

Mirabelles are normally bigger, the size of a victoria but round - Prunus x domestica var. syriaca
See here for picture

Sounds like you've got a cherry plum or myrobalan - Prunus cerasifera
Most of the pictures are red fruit but they do occasionly have yellow ones
AgroAtlas - Crops - Prunus cerasifera Ehrh. - Cherry-plum.
Still nice though!Last edited by purplekat; 16-08-2010, 05:20 PM.
