  • Had a bonfire for the whole day, burning all the nettle, bramble and other junk collected from the garden over the last week!

    • - potted on the chillies. Peat v. peat free trial seems to be going OK (no noticeable difference yet)
      - planted out 2 trays of beetroot. The peat-free (New Horizon) ones were surprisingly stronger, much better root systems
      - planted out 12 pots of Profita pea and a dozen more lettuce (Clarion)
      - didn't water anything at lotty despite a 6 week drought. The plants are finding their own moisture in the soil
      - took blueberries & strawbs to school plot for planting this week
      - sprayed (selectively) school's docks, bindweed & sycamores that I can't reach to dig out
      - killed patio weeds with a pinch of salt or boiling water
      - took more dahlia cuttings from those forced in the gh
      - started hardening off tender flowers & French beans (12" high already)
      - cut lettuce, mustard, sorrel & spring onions for dinner (then got in a huff cos Mr TS had bought tinned spuds & shop onions)
      - dug up all the (bolting) chard & celeriac
      - but saved the pink & orange chard for self-seeding
      - weeded a whole load of flowering chickweed out
      - watered the wilting broad beans & strawberries

      • It was the Weeding day so I went to the plot and weeded - couch grass, dandelions and buttercups from the paths - they force their way through the inches of bark chippings!
Hoed all the onions, shallots and garlic. Can't believe how well they are growing considering the lack of rain. It must rain soon .... mustn't it?

            • In the middle of sowing my winter stuff in some seed trays and modules, my direct sowings for the second time have been bashed by the South Easter and then eaten so am trying a different tack.

                • I'm sowing beetroot, tom thumb carrot, lettuce, spinach, onions, pak choi and peas today. We have a very mild winter down here gets down to about 6c in July at night, but during the day it will be around 11c minimum, usually about 16c. But the summer wind hasn't given up quite yet even though it is definitely very autumnal now.

                  • Cut back the larch hedge that was starting to encroach on the compost bin and comfrey patch.
Planted the sweetpea seedlings into a willow basket.
Planted 2 courgettes out into a raised bed - yes, I know it's a little early, but we're on holiday for 2 weeks shortly and they won't survive in the greenhouse
Planted 3 tomato plants (Roma and Moneymaker) into a growbag in the greenhouse - must do the rest early next week.
OH did a ground elder attack - it's under nearly every raised bed and along the fence at one side. And even starting to come through the lawn...
Planted out hollyhock seedlings in an old welly to put by the greenhouse door!

                    • Moved the pea trays out of the blowaways before they actually did what their name suggests and closed them up.
Planted out my Clematis and tied them on, also planted out some supermarket chives broken up into clumps and some plug plant herbs that I got a wee while ago.
Fully watered the garden before anything else flopped (been three months since rain apart from two short ten minute showers or thereabouts round here).
Watered the raspberries that I planted yesterday and checked for bugs on those, the tayberries and the currants.
Glared at the trays with cucumber seeds in on the off chance it will encourage them to grow (they hate me).

Have about 1/4 tonnes of clay left (enough for another one) if anyone fancies taking it off my hands....

                              • Planted the last of my onion sets. Noticed a few of my spuds are showing above ground. Took cabbage and sprouts outof greenhouse and into sheltered spot to harden off. Did loads of weeding, feeding the spoils to the chooks.
