no news on allotment

hello there, ive sent emails to my various council to find out more about how to get an allotment asap in north somerset, that was over 10 days ago, any ideas what to do next, im desperate to get growing. I have had no replies

bad news, called council and they have put me on a 18 month waiting list. Can that be right??????????. Im going to have to think of another alternative.

Are there any nice old folk near you. Sometimes they are happy to let people grow veg in their gardens. My Nan used to let a chappy use her large garden....he would kindly give her beans and bunches of flowers, help out with odd jobs, she made him cups of tea.....it really was a very nice two way thing. Happy for both parties.

the list may not be 18 months in reality people loose intrest and drop off lists, showing your face regular at the local allotments helps too, that way they know your serious

I have no idea if this site is of any use to you, if it is, perhaps you could visit the various sites if they are near you and enquire about getting one.

The experience of many people here is that it's much quicker to bypass the council and use pester power at sites directly.

Also as an aside it's soon National Allotment Week, and many sites around the country are having open days, so its always worth checking out local press for any details of sites near you.

That's what I did before I got my allotment. Council houses for the elderly used to have bl**dy huge gardens and they were glad for someone to cultivate it for them and give them some fresh veg now and again!
Now I have my allotment I've noticed they've taken all the fences down in the street, grassed the lot and the council run over it once a fortnight with a huge five gang mower.
Looks a bit like a green desert to me, but I think the majority of the penshioners prefer it that way, and the ones that don't probably make up 90% of the plotholders on the allotments!

thanks everyone, I cant believe how friendly and helpful you are, i will keep you posted, I have recently re located to somerset and I have asked the farmer who we rent from if he has a spare bit of land I could rent somewhere on the farm which would be ideal for me. So will let you know what he said, I did make him a lovely victoria sponge, hope that does the trick

Good luck Sindy - fingers are crossed for you over here! I've been on a waiting list for two years now and am finally at the top of the list so have hopes for March ..... hope you have better luck, keep on at your friendly farmer.
