Starting an Association

Wow, I've been going in and going in to the Town Council about a site which it still owns, but has been untended as far as I can see for some years.

I've just been told that, in principle at least, they can start letting it out again provided I can muster support to create an Allotment Association. This means I would be involved in set-up.

Golly gosh. What have I bitten-off?

I took a wander up today, and it's a square flat site... I'd say 4-50 rods. The shape of previous plots is still visible, but there is considerable growth and water-logging (although there seems to be no woody growth).

There are no structures, like chemical toilets or sheds, and if this went ahead, I would hope funding could be found.

This could be fun. Or terrifying.

Yup, there's both the local rag and community radio station, and since yesterday I've found two people willing to put their names down - although I'll wait until formal permission is given, of course.

I'm totally surprised this thread hasn't had more support. It may look as though you have taken on a lot but what an exciting project. Do try to get your local paper on board. As you enlist interested parties, start a waiting list at the same time so that it becomes first come first served.. That way no problems when plots become available. Best plots to the founding members is totally fair.

I am sure that once the word has got around, you will find quite a bit of interest as people do want allotments now.

Don't worry about structures, many lotties don't have any loos or communial areas and work just fine - we don't have anything like that and nobody cares (think we all have our own buckets though). Mind you we don't have a committee either which doesn't cause us a problem either. You're better off getting it all up and running and then worrying about add on bits afterwards so that you can get some things sorted without trying to sort everything at the same time.
