  • Sad broad beans

    My broad beans all have black tips, the frost i think, will they recover or should i start again ?

    Broad Beans are prone to black-fly, last year I couldn't see the pods for black-fly, is it deffinatley frost burn.

      They are black and limp. No flies, too cold i think?

          I think if you cut the tops off they will resprout, sending out more shoots. Although I wouldn't do it until this heavy cold snap is finished. How tall are they? Did you sow them too early?

            The worst affected is about 8 inches tall and outside the fleece tunnel. The others are smaller but all black to.dome degree. I planted them in oct.

              I think we all run the risk of growing things outdoors at this time of year. Might be best to sow some more with protection if poss.

                Much too early for an Autumn sowing especially down South. Mid Nov is probably early enough, in mild Winters you could sow in Dec. they just need to get their feet in the ground and start a root system, you don't want lovely new soft growth too early in the year.
                I sow late feb undercover and move out when they are sturdy plants.
