Bed Edging

Hi All

Just wondering how everyone distinguishes between bed and path on the allotment.

I was thinking of using pallet boards to edge my new beds but have read conflicting comments about the wood attracting slugs and I already have enough of them.

I have wooden edges and fine they work brilliantly, no more slugs than in my garden at home and the wood is handy to squash them against . I find the edging really helps with keeping the beds neat and means I don't lose them as the paths encroach. I then have membrane and bark on my paths which is fine to kneel on, a friend has gravel / stone which is hard and feels sharp through your jeans.

I use wood Mumbles, I have no more slugs than anyone else.

In just 're edging my beds as they've started creeping off down the garden. I'm using the green rolls of lawn edging from Wilkos and Poundstreatcher as its easier to get on the bus than pallets and at this time of year works out at about �2 a bed.


I've got cardboard down to keep the weeds under control and I plan on planting out my paths next year with an aromatic carpet

Just be careful when it starts to break down with UV exposure as you will get lots of bits of green plastic everywhere and it can be surprisingly sharp!

Seriously, a waste of time & money. I used them and they didn't even last a season until they started breaking up into millions of sharp little splinters. They aren't UV stable, and shouldn't really be sold for outdoor use

Are you not just a whisker away from raised beds? If going to all that edging bother why not go the whole hog. Keeps edging and paths super neat.

I have one deep raised bed for root veg, but apart from that my beds have no edging - the problem with going all out with raised beds is that they tend to dry out quickly in warm spells. Also I kind of like the 'organic' look.
