I think I already know the answer but; in the picture you can see the last piece of my plotthat needs sorting ( it actually looks worse than it is as I had been strimming).

. You can cover it with card but you can always plant things through that this year, I've done this with various things, potatoes and squashes worked very well. As far as how long to leave it covered, depends on when you want to cultivate the area. In my first year I covered one decent sized area with card, planted spuds through it. By the time I was due to harvest the card had pretty much broken down and I dug over as I harvested the spuds. It was slightly different when I did it with squashes as obviously you don't dig them up but it still meant that crops were produced from that area.
