Dotty,Originally posted by Dorothy rouse View PostPhew, I nearly had a bads night sleep then!
I put it all round my fruit bushes last year and they were amazing, pounds of fruit, and very few weeds.
If you read 'woodchip as a mulch' on the Internet the increased yield benefits seem to be considerable

Not that VC would bother but you are supposed to keep a bucket in the shed and water it down before use

I know, but I'm just so 'prim n proper' just couldn't, and the other problem is, our sheds are tiny, no room to swing a cat, or anything else.
Our sheds are council concrete ones, all joined together and the door is just big enough for wheelbarrow to get through, they must be about 1+2 mtrs!Last edited by Dorothy rouse; 03-03-2014, 07:46 AM.DottyR

I wud think, that a reasonable idea, I added some to my 'carrot' bed last year, not too much tho, think it was just 'sharp sand'. Carrots were good.Originally posted by Newishgardener View PostJust another thought would it be advisable if I was to use just compost to mix some sand in to help with drainage ?? And if so is there a particular type of sand that is recommended ?

But see what others say, cos as you can see from previous posts, I do things then ask advice afterwards, not always the best plan.DottyR

No.Originally posted by Newishgardener View Postcan these beds be filled with just compost alone ? ... this seems to be the cheaper option to buying top soil
multi-purpose compost is too light & fluffy for raised beds. It dries out too fast in hot weather and doesn't have enough body, esp. for brassicas.
You don't need to buy topsoil, you can do what I did at school and make lasagne beds.

We're agreeing on a whole lot of things these days. It'll never doOriginally posted by Bill HH View Postmy raised beds were filled with ... Cardboard, newspaper, half made compost, better compost, and finaly Multi purpose compost.
I felt the whole lot was a bit light and spongey so this year I might top up with a bit of top soil
