You have my sympathy guys. Whatever you do, do it as a group. I'm still fighting up here but our law is distinctly different. Back in court on Monday the 18th of next month.

As a first step. get some FOI requests in to your Council and establish the rate of increases being applied to the other users of your Council's recreational services. Once you have that, consider the precedent established in this case Harwood v Reigate and Banstead Council. There is a link here ALLOTMENTS COURT CASES | Bucksburn Allotments Association (just noticed one of the two links shown doesn't work but I am aware).

If the plot rent increases are bigger in percentage terms than the other increases, get together and take legal advice. Spreading the cost (which can be considerable) makes sense.

Dont rush into 'owt mate.....unless its a private landlord (so not Parish council or similar) likely hood is they'll be in same boat and youve put such a lot of effort into your plot and people wont be as nice & if theyre empty at 25quid a throw are they empty for a reason???

HM, would you check that you can save that file. I have it on the hard drive of an old computer if there should be some disaster on our web site host's servers but being an old computer mine could blow up any time. If you save it, it's another piece of back up lest you need it

May be I'm going over the top here but I smell a rat.
How much extra rent are the council going to get if all plot holders cough up
It would seem to me a rather small amount to Leeds city council.
How much is the land worth for building?

At the moment with all the land rented out the "council" can do very little with it ...........................But if all the(or most) of the plot holders left then they(the council)could make a case for selling the allotments as surplus to requirements.

                  I say fight it
Is there any way legal advice can be sought cheaply.
One question I would ask though are the allotments legally protected?(don't know official term)

Who is the private landlord? If it's a business or individual, it's unlikely that they'll see rents going up for plots all over the city without jumping on the bandwagon... If it's a church then you have a better chance of the rent staying low.
I reckon there's a good chance of challenging the council on this, and if BW is right and they're just trying to shift plotholders (which I think is highly likely tbh) then you'll be doing them a favour

I don't know who the landlord is Sarah, I was brought up just across the road from the site and always thought it was council run. It was only when I spoke to someone at work today who has a plot there, that I found out it was privately run.
