my allotment

I would like some advice i have just got a allotment and I will be starting to get digging to clear it this week and as i dig out the weeds and stuff i would like to plant as i go. So i would like some advice on what to plant as i go pls help this novice mum who want to give her children fresh veg and for them to enjoy the allotment as well

What do you like to / want to eat?

I'd bang a row/bed of salad stuffs (i.e. mixed leaves/lettuce/radish/etc) in - I always find stuff like that versitle - plus if you're running out of ideas for some dinner, you can always stuff a side-salad on the plate.

D'ya like carrots? AFAIK it's still ok to sow some of them (I hope anyway, as I plan on doing some more tonight).

Edit: if you can't sow/plant as you go, you can always cover the soil to stop weeds.. or perhaps even grow "green manure".. not sure if it's too late/early for it, as I've never grown it.

Thank you for all of that help i will buy that book and I have salad growing in my garden with the flowers but i will put more in my allotment as we do like a lot of salad and i will cover some of the allotment that i can not ge dug but i am going to get some veg in for my christmas dinner

Pumpkins are brilliant for ground cover, and of course children love them. Each plant will take up about 3 foot or a metre of ground.

I'm also growing kidney beans as ground cover this year: just chit some from a packet and then plant them about 5 inches apart when they've sprouted

I did similar to TS but with Nastrutiums last year, I sowed the trailing type and let them run all over the ground, got to eat the flowers and pickled the seeds
