Allotment layout - advice needed

I'm on 48A! Welcome new neigbour!

I haven't gotten around to putting a sign up, but it's the one with a single wooden raised bed, a compost bin (from pallettes) and a white chest down at the railway end. It's two or three plots down from yours

One thing that seems to be a problem is flooding. When the brook is high, the ground can become waterlogged. I find that the flooding happens worst at the south end (my raised bed was full to the brim with water earlier this year). I'm going to be putting my asparagus bed towards the north end, for that reason.

Whoever had your plot last year did a lot of weeding on the northern end, so that'd be a good place to put the crops that are most vulnerable from weed competition.

Nobody else seems to put their gooseberry bushes in fruit cages, so I suspect that birds don't seem to attack them. However watch out for the pigeons, if your brassicas aren't netted, they'll eat every last one of them as soon as your back is turned!

Have you got your strawberry plants yet? I putted a load up from runners last year and have more than I have a use for. If you want some, let me know.

This is brilliant, almost my next door neighbour !!!! I too have to put up a board. Last sunday when we had loads of rains my plot was flodded . I planted some strawberry plants i got from Aldi last week so think I am ok, but thats a lot for your offer. I think I will get some seeds started at home this week so I can plant those in the beds. I am still planning . I'll PM you so we can get in touch with each other and maybe have a chat over the phone. And Thanks for all the fab tips.

sisyphus - did u get waterlogged during the main growing season last year? Did you loose your veggies to being waterlogged? I am getting very worried now

No, the waterlogging only seems to happen early in the year. It's probably a combination of the snow melting and the water in the brook being high. It happened this year and last year if I remember.
