However you're right that lack of shade might be something worth thinking about.

hi, good luck with your plot. I hope you really enjoy it. Just starting my 3rd year and have loved every minute of it, good and bad.Only advice would be don't set anything in stone because you will always think of something better as you go along and a shed is an asset for when its raining or your reading a good book,but on a lot of sites not very good for keeping tools in. Enjoy.x

I seem to be making a daily habit of this.....

Dug another bed today and took a few more photos.

Believe it or not it was snowing 30 mins before I took these!





Not sure whether anyone will be interested in the next photos (I feel like I'm being a bit of a saddo posting these.....). Anyhoo hopefully they show what looks like to me pretty good soil (I'm not sure that I really need to add anything to this for the first season but interested to hear opinions on this).





I think I'm gonna have withdrawal symptoms tomorrow as I will not be able to go up there (have to go into the office tomorrow)......

I'm just envious of the complete lack of weeds .... looks like a good 'un re: soil though I'd prepare yourself to dig in all the manure you can get (except on the bed for carrots)... Any idea how organic or otherwise the husbandry was of the wheatfield?... Remember that there isn't a lot of nutrients in most manure (honourable exception of pig and barnyard cow) so something like blood fish and bonemeal and/or chicken manure pellets will be handy.... that said the soil isn't the degraded grey desert I can remember at the height of chemical farming 30 years ago...

Yes I'm very pleased about the lack of weeds. I think I have the sum total of one weed on my plots!

Apparently it has been manured regularly in the past.

I guess the last time would have been at the beginning of last season.

I'm looking at getting some manure but whether it'll be rotted down enough I'm not sure but as a fall back plan I have a big tub of nutrimate that I got from tattieman for chitting my spuds as per his guide.

I'll have plenty left over so was gonna fork this into the beds prior to planting as it, apparently, is good as a replacement for farmyard manure. The tub says 5kg is equivalent to 1 tonnes worth and I have a 10kg tub to use up!

One month in and the lottie is starting to take shape. Will post another progress photo at the beginning of April (all my 'in-between' photo's will end up on my profile).

One month on and things have changed a bit:

Added another water butt
Planted abd cloched AYR caulis.
Sowed and cloched Olympia Calbrese.
Planted FE, SE and MC pots.
Sowed half row of Sugarsnap Peas.
Resowed turnips that have been eaten by Slugs and another row as well.
Laid woodchip on paths.
Built frames and netted turnips, sugarsnap peas and carrot bed.
Planted rhubarb.
