I have cultivated the grass in between my raised beds into paths by trimming it over the last year and this has worked well.
I have also used wood chip on weed surpresent too and this stays put next to the raised beds.
My grandma also used ash on garden paths and that worked really well for her as i remember.
I have also got a friend who lives in a coastal area and she used crushed sea shells as a path, i know they found paths of sea shells at the Lost Gardens of Heligon in cornwall so you may be able to get a supply of those locally much cheaper than stone.
I initially tried cutting 2 foot widths of carpet for my allotment paths.Even though they were pinned down I arrived one morning after a particularily windy night to find my next door neighbour had wall to wall fitted carpets and mine were gone!
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

That is so 70's!! Carpeted walls!!! How trendy is that.
Seriously though, this old fellas carpet paths have been down in all weathers,(our site is abmega windy one) and have stayed put.
He hasn't been up there for a while else i would venture to ask him how he keeps his carpet down so he doesn't end up giving everyone else a 70's makeover like you!!
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown
