Are your plots only for Locals?

How far away do you have to live from your sites before you are not allowed an allotment there. Let me explain a bit better.

As far as I know allotments in Lowestoft are only availible to Lowestoft residents
and in some villages only residents of that village are allowed them.
However when I moved from Kessingland I was told I could still have my plot as they were thankful someone was cultivating it.

As with Bonfires I think that this is another "Grey Area"
any comments?

Southampton City Council plots are available to anyone living in the coucil's boundaries but you can have one at whichever site you like providing one is available.Ours is about 2 miles away. the waiting list for the one nearest to us is something like seven years because the site is so small and obviously well tended.

People living outside the 'Parish' can be added to the waiting list for a plot, but Parish residents take presidence over outsiders when being allocated a plot, no matter how long the outsiders have been waiting.

And locals are charged less per plot than outsiders (which include people from the next village which is actually closer to the allotments than locals from the far end of the Parish!)

I have a 20 mile round trip to my plot which is in another borough which is also trying to restrict the letting of plots to the locals, when I took the plot on there were plenty of empty spaces and the site management were only too pleased to take outsiders on.

my plot is an fith of a mile It makes sense to have one so close as I need no excuse not to go up there If I stood on my HOOse roof I could see my plot.

Mine takes me about 3 minutes to walk to or 4 minutes to drive to !! As to who can have one, well we have had people about 20 miles away enquire ! As it's a private site we don't have the same restrictions that coucil run sites have.

The site was left in trust to the village to grow Vegetables and the monies went to paying for the education of 2 girls & 6 boys from the village. The site is still owned by the trust but they just lease it to the allotment society now.

I think preference should be given to locals, but if there are plots going to rack and ruin because locals don't want them, then anyone should be allowed to rent them as long as they keep them cultivated properly

I know of one very sought after private run site where you have to be local to get a plot but many people adopt a local address the "move away" ater about 6 months. It seems that this gets round the local requirement.

I can beat that from my frount door to the corner of my allotment is 40foot (heaven!!) When I hand out allotments for the council if anyone contacts me for a plot and there from outside the town I get the councils OK

I er...erm... cheat. I'm secretary of the allotments association. The plot I have is with a Parish Council. I'm a District Councillor. You work it out! It's not as bad as it sounds though as there are 26 plots and only 9 people on them and I live 5 miles from the allotment.

We acquired our lottie sept 05.
There are 24 lotties on the site & there were vacancies when we took over now there is awaiting list.

The sites main gate is 50' from my back gate and I can see my plot from my bathroom window if I stick my head out.

Have someone from the next town on two plots though. One moved away and the other has a plot next to her mum who is a local.

Might frighten a few people if the site agent looked like Tubbs though mightn't it. "This is a local site for local people, are you a local? Don't touch the precious vegetables of the site."

Have the same problem as Bubblewrap. Got our lottie a year ago with no wait but now there is a long waiting list.
Generally they go to locals preferentially (big word methinks ).I'm sure in the past they went to whoever would take them!!!
