Bindweed on adjacent plot

Hi all I recently took on an allotment,i was given half a plot as is the councils policy.The problem being the other half has a fair amount of bindweed near the boundry and the owner seems to be just using the rest of his plot and avoiding this area

Whats my best method of preventing it encroaching into my plot

just make sure your plot is upwind at the time.....

I have the same problem, on both sides of my plot.

I have dug a bit of a trench (a no-man's land, if you like) at the paths, and then planted my crops about a foot in.

I still have to dig and pull it out, it's a horrible weed

If Hell had a plant, this would be it. I took over an allotment plot in March and started digging this stuff up. I didn't know what it was at first other than everytime I tugged at the plant the b****y root just snapped and then each piece would regenerate. I just keep digging in the hope that one day one of us will get fed up and stop.

I have to say chriscross 1966 has the best idea, what's N.Korea's number again.

Roundup!

Doesn't work. It kills the top growth but not the roots, despite what it says on the tin. You might as well pull it.

(I Roundupped mine four times at least, last year. I have just dug over the sprayed ground, and it's all coming back from the roots).

Put some canes in the ground, let it climb the canes, then pop a plastic bag over the top with aload of glyosulphate in. Well thats what my mum tells me todo anyway.

Can you have a word with the adjacent plot holder? If there were 2 of you making war on it it would be 'solved' in half the time

My current thinking is to dig down to some of the root,then dig a bit deeper and put a bottle with something nasty in then feed the root into this.Im hoping the root would suck up the poison.

Would it work ?

At home I have bindweed coming in from one neighbour and horsetail coming in from the other.

I prefer the bindweed! It does not go away completely but a spray with glyposphate works annually to keep it at the boundary. If you can get/create a paint on version of this weedkiller it seems to stick and work better. I have this with my allotment neighbour as well - a vacant plot presently, but it is a light infestation at present and I was able to dig so much of it out my patch.

However the horsetail has jumped under my garden path and the greenhouse and is hell bent on crossing the garden - I hate this stuff, nothing really works as it is so deep rooted.

Hi,

I have small incursions of Horesetail and larger incusrions of bindweed. We cleared our plot from overgrown brambles last year.

I have found if I go around every two or three days keeping a bindweed watch and pulling it up it seems ot make it weaker.

Do not hoe it, hand pull it. This normally pulls up a good three-six inches of root. Next time around when I see it, it went from the thickness of a piece of string, to almost cotton in thickness as the roots are weakened.

Horsetail, it's like playing whack-a-mole, it just pops up, pull it out, it appears somewhere else..

Just keep on pulling...

We are running an organic plot, so far no weed killers, just persistance..

My experience of rhizomes says stick in sheets of mdf, like kitchen cupboard unit sides etc. Looks ugly, not very green at all due to the formaldehyde in the mdf, but it works beautifully and hey, cheaper than a nuke, !
Digging will work against bindweed - as long as it does not have a wall foundation full of cracks to hide in amongst.

I have the same problem as you my top part of the plot is riddle with bilndweed!! How big was your tench?? Im am pulling as much out as possable when digging over.

might I suggest a quiet word with your site manager to see if he can get the adjacent plot holder to up his game a bit...

It joins onto a wild part as such. Im nota alloment just a bit of land that was given to me to use for planting etc. Also i've got clay soil well it's all different in other parts of the plot!!
