Anyone else tried sowing there own collected potato seed yet?

Put some of my Desiree seed in a pot in propagator and I would have thought it should be showing by now? The leeks sown the same day are 3 inches tall!
Anyone else tried there's yet.
I still have some potato fruits that have been outside all winter so I may take a few seeds from these and see if fresh stratified seed works better!

I am holding off until 'root' quarter on the moon planting, then i am going to try the blue salad seeds i was kindly given to try. so keep me updated so i have a clue what to do with them.

Going to try a second sowing of fresh stratified seed tomorrow......straight from the tattie apple!

Well when I read the 1st bit of your thread I felt a bit down,cos I forgot to bring home the saved seed apples....they still sat on the fence having experienced all the elements available from late summer to now!But...reading on...Do you think I'm still possibly in with a chance with them?(I almost chucked them out the other day!)

You tell me! This is seat of the pants stuff for me! As far as I know tatties aren't a biennial so should complete there growth cycle in a single year!

PS thats if you can get them to germinate in the first place!

Might it be worth trying to 'ferment' the seeds in a jar like you do tomato seeds? Perhaps they have the same germination inhibitor as tomato seeds, so you have to mimic the action of being digested to get rid of it?... Just a thought!
I've not done the fermenting thing myself but there's quite a good explanation of it on the Real Seed site.

Don't know anything about germination...athough as they are solanum family; what Sarah said makes sense ...I find with some awkward seeds that they sprout better after a spell in the fridge....maybe?

Re '2 years'....I seem to remember that I was told that you'll do well to get a few seed spuds in year one and of course each plant might be slightly different...(how many seeds in a potato fruit by the way?)

....So, once you've chosen the lucky spud that is receive that illustrious title of 'The Snadger' you'll need those to plant the following year and continue the strain...or lose it forever

You will have to furtle out one to taste in any case because the prospective seed spuds will need to be left there for skin setting, then stored in the fridge to stop them sprouting till following spring

You gets loads from a seed pod Paul - at least 50 I'd say - and they are titchy little things. Yes, part of the reason for doing it is to select out a seed tuber or two to grow on as 'own strain' - Snadger's Delight or Flummery's Favourite or something. What larks eh?

Mine have sprouted !

I tried chitting them on damp kitchen paper (since 4th Jan according to the label). Nowt.

I put them in the fridge. Nowt.

Then I let the seed dry out, then tried chitting again: nada.

Then I needed a jar for a dahlia cutting, filled up the potato seed jar with water, forgot about them and: today I found lots of little seedlings, all having germinated underwater. Little beggars.

I've dug up some of the tubers from my self saved Desiree seed and guess what?..................they look like Desiree potatoes!

They are small but I'll stick em in and see what comes. I suppose now I'll have to plant a couple of proppa Desiree potatoes to do a taste test when they mature.

Snadger, unless you selectively X'd and quarantined them I suppose there was always a chance you'd end up with a desiree....or very similar.

I might try saving seed from a ratte.

I have a couple of plants grown from saved seed. They're in 3 inch pots, I need to find a bigger pot to put them in. I don't have anywhere to put them in the open ground.
