Allotment Committe

Hi,

I was horrified to find that our allotment chairman's son has been brought onto the committe.

I thought the idea of the committe was to have an unbiased effect on what goes on. I feel that by having more than one person of the same family will have an impact on decisions made. As far as I am aware, there was no vote or poll - it just happened!!!

Does anybody on here think this is right???

Well if its anything like ours, no one wants to go on it. They might have been desperate for numbers. Our allotment committee consists of my partner.

What setup is it?

Properly constituted Allotment Association or Society will have a constitution or rule book.

I am a committee member on our site and the truth of the matter is nobody wants to be on the committee out of the 85 plot holder's only about 12 or 13 turn up at the AGM and 5 of them are comming for the cup's that they have wonjacob marley

Comittee members are proposed and seconded at the AGM and voted in by a show of hands.
That's the way it works at our allotment association and as far as I know is the norm.
Can't see a problem with having members of the same family on the committee as long as they are democratically elected!
Best to voice your concerns at the AGM and make sure your comments are minuted!

At our Lotty Comittee members are proposed and seconded at the AGM and voted in by a show of hands.

I am a committe member and so is my hubby and our secretary and his wife are on the committe all vote in in the above way.

It is hard to get committee members who willingly want to join, some of our members have been nudged into it when they attended the AGM.

That's the thing Snadger. They used to post the minutes onto the website but none have appeared for ages!

I personally think it is like giving a reference for a job. you are not allowed anybody of family to do it as it would be biased. I feel that it is the same thing.

You would not be happy will me. I am trading shed secretary and my hubby is treasurer, both voted in. I am not against it until it starts causing problems then the other committee members have to deal with the problems with the stepping a side.

The problem with committees is that few people want to get involved. Both my wife and myself are on our committee (and we both take it seriously and get involved) and it causes no problems. The more people who are involved - the better as long as they do take part in the work of the committee ( and there is a lot of it! ) and are not just in it for the kudos! If I ha

Our allotment site is one big family! We have forty plots and most of the occupants are related! (apart from me being the outsider of course)

You speak of 'They' as if you are apart from them? I am an unpaid Association Secretary who didn't realise how much work was involved and what a thankless task it is. If you have to read the minutes online you mustn't have attended the AGM or other general meetings when a copy should have bean readily available!
I would make it known that you wish to join the committee (and even the Secretaries job and get someone to propose and second you at the AGM.)

The main thing is that you attend the AGM and make your voice heard!

It depends. What is considered a quorum for your committee? If it's five then fine, if it's four then this gives this pair the opportunity to swing things their own way, especially as one is the chairman, does he/she have the deciding vote in the event of a split?

sorry, i am not on a committee, allotment or otherwise, cos i can't stand the infighting....but, I am with snadger on this, if you are not involved, then you shouldn't really be complaining, attend the meetings, make your voice heard, volunteer!!

half the time these committees have to draft in family members cos noone else will volunteer,far happier letting someone else do all the work, and a lot of associations have set up rules that if there is NO committee, there can be NO association, there has to be a committee or you don't get your allotments!!
try to put yourself in their shoes, or at least find out what wearing those shoes means for everyone else.

As with the other posters if you don't like it get involved. I'm sure if you volunteer to be part of the committee they'll bite your hand off...
