  • Climbing french beans

I have just erected my canes for the french beans on my raised beds. If i plant them out this weekend, am i too early because of late frosts, or do i just take a chance. If there is a late frost will putting up a fleece around them protect them as they are very tender.

You are far south of me Chuffa, but I still think you are pushing your luck to plant them out now. I haven't even sown mine - I won't put them out here till June. You might get away with it but it's a real setback if they get frosted.

I agree with Flummery...still to early. I've just sown one lot but wouldn't think of planting outside until well in to May.

It's not just the air temp and frost. The soil temperature needs to be a steady 16 C for Frenchies to grow. How to care and cultivate your French Beans vegetables

Planted out some dwarf french beans this morning. I know it is a big risk especially as the forecast is cold weather again next week. I have sown another batch so am not to concerned if the risk doesn't pay off. Someone on another plot planted all his runner beans out today.
