Would it be ok to dispose of Hawthorn hedge trimmings in the base of my raised beds before topping up with 18 inches of soil?

Are they spikey? If so, I’d bury them deep (18 inches sounds good) for obvious reasons .

If you sow peas it might be worth keeping some of the hawthorn trimmings back until Spring. I usued to take out a spade width drill to scatter the pea seeds in, then add short pieces of spiky hedge trimmings (say 8" long) before covering the seeds with soil, to deter the mice from eating the seeds .

At that depth it should be fine I have buried hawthorn cuttings in the past with no problems, though I do like nicks suggestion to keep some to protect peas from mice
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
