I've just taken on a very overgrown allotment in Cornwall. We've cleared a Strawberry bed ( double row and nicely mounded).
We've cleared a couple of beds and wonder what we can plant now to overwinter, while we work on the rest of it.
I've started some Broad Beans and are looking for something else.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated

1) soft fruit eg gooseberries, raspberries etc
2) green manure to help with fertility next year
3) garlic
4) rhubarb

PS have a word with other allotment holders, you may be able to cadge some stuff and also get local advice or at least sympathy + don't forget to enquire if they get loads of manure delivered.

Autumn planted onion sets both white and red are a must. You may be able to buy spring cabbage or kale plants at your local garden centre

There are also a few seeds you can still plant in October, particularly as you are in the south. Some of the winter lettuces or lambs lettuce can be sown in October.

Peas? Would work alongside the broad beans.

Just to elaborate on this. The reason, as far as I know for sowing round peas instead of crinkly peas in autumn is that mildew and other types of moulds are more likely to get into the crinkles of crinkly peas. Maybe crinkly peas soften more as well whilst hard round peas are less likely to be susceptible.

Jay-ell knows this of course but maybe newbies don't!
