I have tried working with stem cuttings around November the last two years. Followed advice on this forum and made an effort to be hygienic, keep the exposed section of the cuttings in a moist atmosphere and the section in the growing medium warm. Some of the last batch seemed to be growing until I allowed too much sunlight on them. So I intend to screen them with a bubble wrap curtain next time.
Timing sounds about right - they definitely don't benefit from direct sunlight though - a dampish spot near a North facing wall is good - push some 8" pieces in to a slit in the ground and put some plastic bags over them - should get about 80% success rate, but don't move them for at least a year.
