Raised beds, and filling them, is going to cost you a fair bit. May I suggest grabbing a cuppa, and having a good read up on here about other methods? Not saying you're on the wrong track, but the are other, cheaper ways to improve your soil, without breaking either your back or your wallet - you may be surprised!

Glutton4, many thanks for the advice. I should have also said in my OP that my dad, who's 79, is keen to help out with looking after the plot so this is may way of making things a bit easier for him as well as a quick way of getting reasonable soil.

I've done a few quick calculations of overall costs of the 8 raised beds and even the price of topsoil alone is scary so I'm only going to be building 4 beds in the first year and only half-3/4 filling them. The rest will be built and filled over the next year to spred the cost.
