    dont know if this is good or bad idea, but here goes;

    have you not thought of having the lawn as one large raised bed on top of original lawn.
    say, 4inch boards all the way round, fill with top soil, re-seed.......... around the side put down some sort of weed barrier and top with gravel or woodchip.
    this would help with drainage also

      Lidl do a 'family friendly' grass seed which is a mix of fine and course grass. So it should be pretty tough and hard-wearing. I used it and it came up trumps for me. I think that book will be a great help to you. It offers many different solutions from utility lawns to luxury lawns and also from starting a new one to maintaining and renovating an existing one. It's great. Read that and I'm sure you'll work out what's best for you.
