  • Newby alert!!

Just wanted to say hello to you all on here I have to say it is a very informative and friendly site.
Have just started my veggie plot (last weekend) and am completely obsessed Have been given a small cougette plant which is doing well in my shed along with a chili plant which i recently discovered had greenfly
Have also got a couple of tomato and pepper plants in my home made greenhouse.......well kind of greenhouse!! One of my pepper plants is very small and doesn't seem to be doing much but fingers crossed.
Am just eagerly awaiting some sign of life from my seeds that i have planted, carrots, beetroot, purple sprouting broccolli and squash.
Any comments, suggestions tips gratefully received.

Have recently employed my son to collect slugs and snails which are in endless supply throughout my garden. It costs me 50p per evening, which is well worth it

Hi and welcome to the grapevine! Keep your courgette and chili plants away from frost - most people's last frost date is mid - late May so not long now till you can plant the courgette out.

Chillis and greenfly - go together like fish and chips! Slighly soapy water will help to wash them off and it destroys the waxy coating on them too. Or you can squish them by hand. Keep your seed-beds watered - if the weather's dry that is! Good luck with it - you think you're obsessed now - just you wait!
Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Hi and welcome to the vine. We give and receive advise gladly here.

I love this time of year, sewing seeds and checking every five minutes to see if something has popped its head out of the soil yet! It is a very obsessive pastime. Enjoy!!

I'm no expert but my advice would be not to worry too much about where to squeeze everything in. Only plant what you're likely to eat. Obvious really but if you're anything like me, you can get carried away with it in the early days.
Good luck - oh, and, could I borrow your snail-collecting son, please ?

He's amazing and it's certainly a novel approach to the horrid critters! He collects them in a tub puts the lid on it and pops in the freezer. In the morning we put them out for the birds!! My seeds are well on their way and am now looking forward to getting stuff out of the shed and into the garden.
