A complete beginner from Cheshire!

Hello there from a sunny but chilly Cheshire!

After weeks of meaning to signing up I've finally got round to joining the forum. We live in a rented house and so putting things in the ground isn't really an option for me, however, I'm looking into buying a lean to greenhouse for the back of the house and growing all my stuff in containers.

This will be the first post of many I'm sure!

To begin with has anyone got any views on the cheap plastic lean to greenhouses from the likes of Gardman etc? Like I say permanent fixtures aren't an option and so I though this was the next best thing!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome! I don't have any experience of the lean-to greenhouses but I gather they need serious fixing down or the wind will just rip them up or blow them away. Some use them with success though.

i have two 'plastic' greenhouses, bodged together to make one nice sized one, they are still standing at the moment, if disposable greenhouse is all you can manage, then why not try them, each one cost me �30, and if they fall apart, at least i can use them for staging etc.

Thanks for the tips Two sheds. I may try one, but I'll make sure its well anchored down. Its going to be in a very sheltered corner of the patio but my other concern is it won't be south facing. Does this make a huge difference with a small greenhouse or am I wasting my time with a greenhouse that isn't south facing?

well i am on the southcoast which of course makes a difference, tempreture wise, but my greenhouse is north facing, and i still get some pretty good tempratures in there.

i have taken the added step of plcing one of those small mini greenhouses inside the main one, the 4 shelf tall ones? all the tender stuff goes in there and is as snug as a bug, bubblewrap all down the insides, all i need now is a kettle and i wont even have to come indoors to warm up

Hello and welcome. I've got a tiny plastic (polythene) "greenhouse" from B&Q. It blew down 24 hours after I'd put in some seed trays of herbs My grandson and son-in-law came over and sorted it out for me by putting a load of bricks on the bottom shelf. I shovelled all the compost (plus seeds) back into the trays and ended up with 6 trays of mixed herbs It's been working for me for the past year, so I should think a lean-to 1 would be fine as long as it's well anchored

We're only a few miles from you in Trafford!

We've one of the cheap plastic greenhouses, had it in the back yard last year and were eating toms from it in May, this year it went onto the new plot (at the back) and did ok, but not as well as the greenhouses!

Welcome I have one of those its tied to the fence post and I weigh it down with either a large pot or bricks or whatever I can find thats heavy.

A landrover???Mine OH is a fan of them,this year I found the use for them as well-growing dill in container on the LR roof
