  • Food Vacuum Sealer Machine

I have ordered one of these, which will hopefully be delivered today.

I bought it to seal up homemade cheese once it's cut into wedges and to try aging some cheeses in bags rather than waxing them.

I will also use it when I divide up meat/chicken etc for the freezer after a visit to the butcher but I'm wondering what else I could use it for, do any of you have any tips, what else could I use if for?

*Trying to justify buying another gadget *

Sorry can't help, I've never been able to work out anything that they're good for so you're doing far better than me

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

They use them a lot on master chef and great british menu, to seal meat before cooking it in a water bath. Also meant to be good for instant pickling of vegtables.

You're right, they do. I never like the idea of cooking in plastic, don't even like plastic jugs etc in the microwave so it always makes me a bit nervous when they do that.

I use mine to pack bacon in while it's curing in the fridge. I also use it to pack my hops after drying and before freezing.vac packing is great for preventing freezer burn too.I also use it to pack dried herbs and fruit that have come out of the dehydrator they last a lot longer that way.

I use mine all the time, I buy big packs of meat and divide them up into portions for the freezer, I pour portions of soup for one and take camping, also make boil in the bag stuff to take camping. I wouldn't be without mine. Also, if you are the sort that likes to be on the water, it makes a great watertight seal for papers etc. and for sending packages around, it is always easier to pack something that has had all the air taken out of it.
Love mine - I would say it is the most important gadget I have in the kitchen - and with an OH like mine, we have loads of gadgets

my Mom has had one for years, but she buys meat and vegetables in bulk in South Africa, and freezes and labels it. All meat and veg is placed in special plastic bags and vacuum sealed then placed in the freezer. It keeps the items fresh.

I'm seriously thinking of buying one soon to store my excess home grown veg

Anything you put in a freezer or fridge, you can vacuum seal. SOups a bit messy so I wouldn't recommend that
Cooked food portions too, like lasagne, or quiches etc..

Sounds great, I've always wanted to try curing bacon, I must put it on my to do list I had a go at making corned beef but I wasn't overly impressed with the recipe I used so I'll need to look around for a different one and try again.

I have to say that I love this machine, if I only ever used it for cheese it would be well worth the money, I love the natural rind cheeses and will still make some of them but vac sealing cuts out a lot of work keeping the moulds at bay.

I'm not big on gadgets and really wasn't sure about buying this machine but even Mr Ananke thinks it's the best thing in the kitchen and he's less impressed with gadgets than I am.
