Buying a greenhouse

Hi everyone,
Am thinking of buying a greenhouse for my allotment. Am thinking of possibly a 6x4.
Was wondering if anyone could recommend a company or a make?
Have seen some with polycarbonate panels are these type any good or should I try and go for the glass type?
Any advice is very helpful.

Where is this greenhouse to be sited? On an allotment or garden? Allotments tend to be more exposed so need something a bit substantial. Some people on here have the polycarbonate ones but seal the panels in with silicon sealant.
Whatever size you choose it will be too small, so choose the biggest you can fit in an afford. I have a 6x6 greenhouse, made by Elite, and have had no problems with it. I have toughened glass in mine as it is near the house and my boys played football at the time. I've never replaced any glass.

Grenhouse site

Am thinking of having greenhouse down allotment. We are in rented so don't want to have to lift it if we have to move.
Thing is we aren't a secure site as members of there is a public footpath through the site with several entrances and exits.
Have just got my second half plot with a shed on. Typical I had ordered a shed for my original plot then this one comes up. So was going to see if anyone needed the second shed and then put greenhouse on that site. Quite a big space so was thinking of having a 6x4 or 6x6.
Was thinking of a poly one due to my kids but also because of the local kids if they got bored one night. It has been known there.

I think that some allotments don't allow glass? - because of the problem of any that gets broken being left in the soil (unscrupulous tenants ) and then future tenants uncovering it.

If it is going on an allotment I would have thought polycarbonate is the way to go as chances of breakages, accidental or otherwise, are higher than at home! Sorry should have read your original post more carefully. I still think you are looking at quite small greenhouses 6'x8' is the "standard" size they come in. have you got room for a bigger one?

Know what you mean. Ours does allow glass. Some one has buried a bath in one of the top plots to collect water. Has been told several times its dangerous but doesn't do owt about it.

Can always make room Just wont tell hubby the actual size of it til it arrives.

I have got 4 greenhouses, all secondhand. The most I paid was �35 (including staging etc) They have all had to be dismantled and moved and a few panes of glass replaced but they are all old sturdy glass greenhouses. before you buy new I would ask around to see if anyone locally is getting rid.

We were thinking at the start of the new growing season new people usually join the allotment. So see if anyone wanted to swap a shed for a greenhouse. I never seem to find a second hand one or I usually have just missed it.
