  • Chainsaw recommendations please?

OH has found a Silverline for about £150 at a local shop, and instructed me to get that one. mmmm. Apparently he'd love a Stihl or similar but they are 'around £450.00' and 'anything less than that and they are 'much of a muchness'.

    mmm again.

So, I need to not spend £450 - but where he is saying that it won't get much use so far it isn't him who has stood with his father and trimmed one hedge and hacked up about an eighth of what is on the floor. We need a good one

Corris, I have a stihl power saw bought second hand. My hedgetrimmer is a stihy, my strimmer is a stiihl , likewise my backpack blower. All bought because of their reliability and all bought second hand some from fleabay.
That's the route I would take if buying again. I'm gardening for a living so tools can be called into use every day or perhaps not for a couple of weeks so they need to start when needed. Not an advert for stihl but some pretty good reasons for going for that brand.

A word of caution, don't be tempted to buy one of the recent chinese imports. Dickens of a job to get spares for if they go wrong.

Don't go for an electric one they don't have the omph of a petrol one and are not as easy to use as they always have to be within reach of a power source, and all that cable Eeek.

Can't help much I'm afraid as I've only ever used one once when we carved up our garden. I do know that it was McCulloch, and the dude that owned it said it was pretty good.

I always believe in buying the best I can for the budget - more often than not that means buying second hand.

Stihl, Husquvarna or Jonsered are probably the 3 best makes available with not a lot to choose from between them performance wise, but of the three Stihl probably has the best dealer / support network so spares / repairs should be easy to get hold of.
I use a chainsaw minimum of two days a week and it's a Stihl. All the gardens / estates / farms I work at also own chainsaws and every one is a Stihl. Says it all really.
I would definitely spends a while looking on FleaBay - there are some good buys on it if you can travel to collect - not so easy for me being so far north.

Would be a good idea, they carry a good range of saws & I always found them good to deal with when I lived in Norfolk & worked in forestry.
