Seriously, I'm getting fed up with this fence lark. We need to get it done before the plants start growing again in April.

I'm also trying to sort out new carpets and we can't agree on colours (the bloke won't get back to me, but he's a mate of a mate so I feel obliged to use him) and a greenhouse (that's another battle because I want a lean-to, and Himself wants a 3 foot square invisible one).

Decisions, Decisions...........it's no good on an empty glass....... but then again if the decisions were made on a full glass they would be the wrong ones.

TS - I'm assuming you're coastal (as far east as you can get?).

I'm just 400 yds from the coast and our fences are sideways on to the sea and the full force of its sometimes hazardous gales. The position rises from the sea and therefore we are very exposed to the full force of the elements.

We had panel fencing down one side which went to blazes (rot/wind) some years back. I got a quote to replace OR to have them replaced with feather edge construction (vertical). The difference at the time was only around �100 so I decided to go for the stringer feather edge option.

The team which installed it were great and didn't use just those 'cradle' affairs to receive the horizontal struts - they hewed the end off and fixed then firmly into place in the receiving holes on the uprights for the strongest possible attachment. They stripped the old fence did the major uprights and horizontals one day and returned the next to apply the feathered boards. They told me that should an odd vertical board go (4" approx) it would be so much easier to replace - a job I could do. I was also expertly informed that the life of this fence should be at least 25 years and I can well believe it from the great workmanship. This type of construction is immensely strong but of plain appearance - but can always be tarted up with a trellis top or have some trailing plants growing up and across it. You could even paint it with a nice coloured preservative or even make a coloured pattern? Perhaps a good place to start espalliered fruit trees?

If you don't have a contact fencer why not ask someone in your area with a similar fence who did the work?

I also quite liked the idea of the patterned open-work brick built wall. If you are staying put for at least the next 5 yrs I would strongly recommend that whatever you chose it has to be strong enough for the weather conditions and your perimeter security and if that costs a few pennies more its well worth it. If you have the skills to do the job yourself - the savings would be huge.

Quark, thanks for the ideas.
I don't want a solid fence, because of the turbulence it creates in the garden. The trellis idea is a replacement for hedging (which would be ideal for filtering the wind, but is too slow-growing and we don't have the space).

I've just seen 2 reps, and they don't seem to have a clue about wind-filtering. Their only concern seems to be privacy, ie solid panels.

I now think we'll go for this stuff. It's not what I want, it's not what he wants, but it's a compromise.

So glad you got it sorted, you can't bet a good fence or the privacy it brings.
