I used Coco and Coir multipurpose (not the sowing compost) last year for sowing into (it was a Which? best buy) and it was pretty good. It comes dehydrated in a solid block, so I chopped off enough for each sowing and added water as required.

This year all my broad beans and early peas sown into it rotted, but that might have been because I was too early. On the other hand, my tomatoes are looking really good - so who knows?

Do you add perlite or vermiculite, ChingfordHarry? There's a tiny bit in my compost, but not much, and I was thinking of maybe adding a bit more. It seems to dry out in next to no time.

hi Snoop - not usually. I've got some fig cuttings in 50:50 vermiculite: C&C compost, but normally I don't. I find that the C&C dries out on the surface but stays moist underneath for quite a while - but it's hard to know how wet it actually is without using a digital moisture indicator (aka "forefinger") poked into the compost.
