hi everyone . i have been thinking of getting one of the darlek plastic type from our council (18 in hertfordshire) but im abit confused as how they work. every thing i've read on getting good compost states that you have to turn it regular stuff like that. so as you can't do that with those type of bins does that mean it all gets abit slimy and smelly?. i will have to place it quite near the house so bit worried about that. thanks in advance for any help.
I've got half a dozen of the large daleks and they're always full. I never turn anything and they are in the shade. Apart from the top 25%, the rest of the compost is crumbly and brown. I put all my garden waste as well as all my kitchen veg peelings. Every spring I empty them out, put the unrotted bits back in one of them and let the copious red worms do their stuff. All this turning is a waste of time, completely unnecessary. You'll still get the good stuff with no effort!
Oh dear i'm doing something wrong then.We have been putting all our peelings tea bags etc into our dalek bin and its a gooey wet mess still after years. Hubby turned it out yesterday to dry it out.We will try getting another bin so its not so squashed down. Will that help?
I use old pallets(tied together with old tights )and a lid of thrown out plyboard covered with old lino.Works well. When you want to use the compost just cut the tights and shovel.
