  • I went to visit the folks at the weekend, and cut down an old rotten plum tree that MBE snr wanted removing. I pinched a couple of lichen-covered branches that I had a plan for.

I was given a bird box for Christmas. Unfortunately, the garden is still bird-unfriendly - two Gittens and no real cover. The only place I could put it that the Gittens can't get to, and that faces in the right direction, is the front of the garage. I used the plum tree branches to fix around the box for perching sites and a semblance of cover. I was worried that it would look dreadful but actually I'm quite pleased:

I don't know if this is important for birds but I thought it might help.

    • I also got a couple of branches full of bracket fungi - not quite sure what I'm doing with these yet but another logpile with the new hedgehog house seems likely.

      • Any reason why I can't use all the wood chippings from the hedgehog house to mulch round my gage tree?

They fell out of a bit of bamboo I was cutting for the bee house.

          • I've spent the last three days putting the contents of two raised beds through this:

I reckon I've pulled something approaching half a tonne of stones out of these:

I'd already done one bed but I've not had the opportunity to do the others because they've never been empty when it's sunny enough for long enough. Well now it's done and I no longer feel like I'm trying to grow veg in a box of rocks.

            I am quite tired now.
