You should have searched the Vine - not Google! Their search engine is rubbish

After the last break in I now secure with small padlocks. If kids get on site they'll hopefully be kept at bay but if more serious thieves arrive the locks will yield without causing too much damage. The last time we were hit thieves smashed through the wall of a brick site building plus a pre-cast concrete panel of the site shop. Even the biggest padlock can't stop them if they're prepared to do that.

I don't lock my shed. I leave my basic tools there, also a camping stove (but I don't leave the gas bottle).

The site has a decent fence all round and people are very good about keeping the gate locked. Still we did have some trouble a couple of years back when a shed got burnt down.

I brought the tools home for a week in the summer when travellers took over a car park 100 yards away from the site. I feel slightly guilty about my prejudice there, in the event I didn't hear of any trouble.

I looked but could not see how to edit the poll. Basically after the string of attacks we have had I was interested in seeing what the split is between locking and leaving open with the Grapes.

There are some on our allotment that have chosen to leave the sheds unlocked so they can open throw everything about some times outside the shed and sometimes they take tools and items like screwdrivers which they then use to unscrew or lever the locks off other sheds, but no damage to the shed the visit is usually done but they hardly ever close the door on their exit.

There are other plot holders that didn't lock and have now decided to lock because of the clearing up and they just don't want to make it easy for the blighters.

There are some that have always locked and repaired normally at least once a year.

There are some that have fitted internal locks rather than external ones that can be cut or broken off.

I lock my polybar as well as the gate to my plot, (which would be a waste of time against vandals, but keeps nosey parkers out), but the security improvements we made to the fencing including making it harder to climb and putting anti vandal paint on the top railing seem to have stopped all access other than via the access gate as we have had no problems at all since carrying out this work.

I lock my shed and still don't have anything of significant value in it (also there's a big hole in the roof).

    started a poll Locking Sheds

    Locking Sheds

    23
I lock My Shed so it's difficult for them to gain access
    65.22%
    15
I leave it open because of the possible damage
    34.78%
    8
The aim is to see how many people on Allotments lock their sheds and how many don't because of the damage they do when they break in and allow free access for them to just go in and take what they want.

Don't forget to complete the POLL above this post
