  • Am I normal

Hi am I the only one who apologises to plants when they have to be dug up. I spent the weekend digging compost an horse muck into my raised beds ready for the peas, I had to dig up a fair few calendula seedlings as I was doing it. I had already rescued about 20 of these, and have down another 40ish. I just don't have room for any more. I found myself saying sorry every time I dug up a seedling

How do you think I feel with 50+ Butternutty squashes
How do I choose which ones to plant and which to compost

                  Welcome to the nutters club

Edit: I don't have much of an issue getting rid of mature plants that have had a life but I do struggle with seedlings. I have a buddleia (sp?) hedge grown from seedlings rescued from the gravel drive, I still have a purple toadflax that appeared several years ago, I have a juniper and cotoneaster seedling in pots that I have no idea where they will go and I feel bad murdering the sycamore seedlings but realistically I have no homes for them

You're perfectly normal. Apologising to plants is just good manners

Do a car boot VC make some pennies for your next lot of seeds. The sales must be starting soon

It depends on the plant. Last night, I hacked down a lot of wild grasses with absolute joy (the seed heads get in the dogs' ears: painful for them and costly for us at the vet's) but I apologise to all the wild poppies and camomile that come up. As for my seedlings, I always sow more brassica seeds per module than I want, but I'm terrible at getting rid of the surplus and leave them all far too long.

I nearly cry when I thin seedlings, and definitely apologise when I have to grub out plants. The worst is 'retiring' houseplants...
