How come....

How come everytime I see someone elses garden where they have a veg patch it looks so neat?

I try to do mine in neat rows and tidy as I go etc but it always looks like ther is empty patches or too much in one place and not enough in another...

I dunno, it just always looks random... and not in a cottage garden random haha

Anyone else have this?

Im lucky I dont have envy for my neighbours gardens, theirs is worse than mine haha.
I think I will have to work on it this year.

I am the worst at straight lines and my garden always looks a mess, when i see perfect garden i can't believe how much time they must spend on them, i do not have that time, i would rather be growing tings instead

I think the same lisa, this yer I am going to try my best to have a neat garden i think I will pop in nasturtiums as a ground cover so at least the ground is covered with the veg sticking out and hopefully the boarder looks fuller and less of a general mess....

When we first took our allotments there was one the site that always looked amazing with it's immaculately mowed paths and neat rows. At the time we were up to our ears in brambles, rubble and triffid sized weeds.

I looked at this allotment with envious eyes.

A couple of years later we were friends with the owner of the aforementioned allotment and discovered that the only successful crop he grew was onions and he was envious of our vast variety of veg and fruit even though our allotment will never win prizes for neatness.

I realised then that appearances can be deceptive and I'd rather be productive than neat. I also have an inbuilt aversion to straight lines.

Sorry but I like to be neat, tidy ( including straight lines ) and productive. I work flipping hard to achieve it. But I do have the advantage of only working part time. It would be very hard ( close to impossible) to be that obsessive if I worked full time.

Oh I love neat lines, I never noticed that I did till my father inlaw pointed it out so I put in a curve on one of the corners which is now called peter's curve after him ha!

Mine is always a mess, with beans, cucumbers and squash escaping over the paths mixed in with all the flowers. It starts off neat and tidy, but there wouldn't be places for all the bug eating birds or the hares to hide if it stayed that way

To get straight lines on our plot we use a " line" which is just string with metal ends to put in the ground quick to use but effective,also makes weeding and hoeing easier.However I agree that as long as you get the produce you want from your plot that's all that matters.

My nan use to say another mans grass is always greener but it will still need cutting.

I have the same problem Evans. Doesn't matter what I do at least two or three things end up wonky or gappy.

I'm also going for productive over neat. Although I do try to keep my main raised bed quite tidy, last year I had a hubbard blue squash destroying everything it twined it's way through. My aim this year is to have a lawn border that's a bit more cottage garden - 'pretty' veg and flowers, with the raised bed being used for things that work well in straight lines, e.g. root veg. The squash is going elsewhere!

Perhaps you only see the neat ones because the messy ones are so messy you don't recognise them as veg patches
