We had a great crop of sweetcorn this year but towards the end of the season many of the cobs were complete and perfect but each niblet was hard and rounded like a popcorn. These were general sweet cob variaties, nothing unusual. Was this caused by a lack of water as the cobs ripened perhaps? Or was there another reason.

It's usual to harvest the whole crop at the same time (and freeze any excess).
