                          • Being an atheist is academic Kevin, God is a noun for everyone, the dictionary definition say so ....

A noun is a part of speech that denotes a person, animal, place, thing, or idea.

The quote is not literal. The Divine is an animating force of Love.
What he is alluding to is that faith should not be 'inactive' i.e. just vain repetition of prayers and the like, it should be a living faith brought 'alive' and expressed by loving acts of Service.

Akin to 'Faith without charity (loving kindness) is dead. Love is the fulfilling of the Law.'
Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.
