Scotland's Referendum 2014

Good evening Peeps..In 43 days scotland will be voting for independence..Me and my wife have yet to decide to vote YES or NO on the 18th September...I would love to hear your thoughts on this Referendum

I am English and live in France.
..and so am subject to alternative choices for our future as ex pats...so am aware of your 'tricky situation'???

I think you need to decide what is best for your country - and not vote for what is best for you, and be prepared/suffer any consequences your politicians ( who are supposedly the experts) are not aware of/have explained to you as yet


sometimes, going with your heart can cause more suffering than you are expecting.
Having said that- what are you aware of will be the benefits of going it alone???


Not a choice I would want to make with my limited knowledge of Scottish affairs.

Thank you for that Nicos...The benefits of scotland going alone would be that any decisions about scotlands future would be decided in scotland but on the whole i probably think i am leaning more towards a NO vote..I think there is too much unknown how an independence scotland would work..

I use to live in Peterhead just north of Aberdeen for about 8 years when I was younger.
Bit of a tricky one really. Like you say there is a lot of unknown quantities to consider like currency, army ,financial support say if the dreaded foot and mouth reared its ugly head again (touch wood it never will) and where Scotland would stand in the EU and would you have to apply to join, if you wanted to, or would you go in automatically.
Think there are more questions than answers at the moment on all subjects.

I am English but I would love the Scots to vote no. No political reason purely that I love Scotland, like the Scots and having been in the army I am very proud of our Scottish regiments.

As I sit here I am listening to a cd of the pipes and drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and I will certainly raise a large dram of the finest should the folks vote no.

Yup i totally agree, with only 6 weeks until the vote there is definately more unanswered questions.

I think too that you have to remember that we are really not voting for ourselves but for the people of the future in Scotland.

Politically, from what I have seen I do not trust Alex Salmond mind you I don't trust any politician of any nationality. What every happens he/they will be OK whilst others may be left to pick up the pieces.

...too many people vote for what is best for them and just fail to see the implications of ignoring the greater scheme of things.

I'm voting NO. It is really galling that Scots folks living outwith Scotland cannot vote on this issue and non Scots living temporarily in Scotland will be able to vote even although it is not their country. The voting age has also been reduced so that 16 year olds can vote on this . There has been no confirmation what will be used as currency if there is a yes vote and the EU membership issue is by no way looking positive. I heard on the radio this morning that the polls indicate that only 30 % of those eligible to vote will vote in favour but that will be no consolation if only 29% vote no.

I'm not a political animal but this worries me silly.

I am English but worked up in Inverness intermittently and loved it there. I was based in London at the time and from the highlands it seemed a ridiculous distance away. I could quite understand why Scotland would like its independence but personally I would be very sad as I would love it to stay part of the United Kingdom.

I think they would be barking mad to leave the union. If I was Scottish I would not be happy that after years and years of discussion about the issue that there are still no answers to hundreds of questions, it seems they have adopted a policy of "Oh we will sort that out later" Well it is too important to gloss over the very serious issues and if they don't know what they are doing I would be very suspicious of Mr Salmond's abilities.

To be fair though, Scottish people who live outwith Scotland on a permanent basis have basically turned their back on the country so it is only right they don't get a vote. People who live and work in the country are more than entitled to the vote in my opinion!

My daughter and son-in-law both moved down to England just before they married several years ago. I don't see why they should vote on what happens in a country they don't even live in!
