Well it's nearly upon us, and in celebration of that fact we had a World Cup dinner where we managed to honour 13 nations that qualified:
Firstly we had a cheeky glass of chilled fino sherry by way of an aperitif (Spain)
Nice bit of local English steak.
Accompanied by French fries (which as we all know, were a Belgian invention), some Courgette (sounds French!), and a little side salad of Mizuna (Japan), Feta (Greece) and tomatoes (which originated in the Andes, so I'm counting that as Ecuador!) drizzled with Olive oil and balsamic (Italy).
...all washed down with the last glass of last night's Aussie Shiraz and the first glass of a nice Chilean Merlot.
Then we fancied a bit of cheese and biscuits later on. Emmental (Swiss) Gouda (Dutch) and Jarlsberg (Norway...yeh I know they're not in the World Cup this time, but it needed eating up as was beginnig to overpower the smell of my slippers!). All with a glass of Port(ugal).
Note: no haggis, leeks or Guinness were involved in our meal. (Now if that's not a red rag to a bull, I don't know what is)

Of course I will be laughing on the other side of my face when England lose to Costa Rica and are on the plane home after a week!!

without being called "mardy" while he is watching the footie.

. Actually Canada would be nice, somewhere I've always thought about going but doubt we'll go. The men's matches didn't used to be a rip off, in fact Japan was fine (although obviously the flights weren't cheap) and the infrastructure was amazing. Re the hooliganism, I've been to loads of matches were the press make a massive deal out of a very small number of people being idiots, with 99% of the fans just having a good time. Think the only time I've felt intimidated at a match was Italy v England in Rome in the final qualifier for 1998 and that was the Italian police / security who pointed guns at us then locked us in the ground for about 3 hours after the match had ended telling us there was a riot outside. They even turned off the water in the toilets. When we got out we discovered there was no trouble outside but people had missed flights and trains. The only trouble had been during the match with the police charging some of the fans, thankfully not the section we were in.
