Don't you water your seedlings when you plant them out then? How is watering them different to puddling? The only difference with leeks is you don't back fill with soil, you let it do it on it's own over time, so actually saves time. How is this faffing?

I thought that too, always water everything in when planting (unless it's raining at the time ). The longer this conversation goes on the clearer it becomes that it's about growing preferences and nowt to do with myths and / or facts.

Perhaps I'm just cack-handed with the watering can, but I've always found dribbling water down into each planting hole of leeks really fiddly, and a chore.

Can I just put the rose on the watering can and do heavy all-over watering instead and the water will puddle itself into the leek planting holes? I guess so - if that's the case this thread will have revolutionised my leek cultivation.

Hazel I use an old stainless tea pot its the same one I use to scoop Comfrey tea into my watering can.

That's an old un Mumbles,fill a half barrel with soil,thrash a scaffold pipe in at planting intervals,fill with growing mix/compost & plant seeds in that,or least ways that's the Kentish version

Last year my leeks all failed miserably, I did as taught by my father and so on backwards. Make a big hole and drop leek in and fill with water. For me they were all dire, now there could be many reasons for this but I'm favouring the fact that I'm on heavy clay soil and I'm not sure much earth back filled so they never really got to grips. However it could also be that I didn't water them again or pay any attention to them whatsoever. This year I'm growing them in my raised beds to see if the finer soil improves their chances.

Gardening is all about experimenting trying to find what works for you and your conditions and what doesn't. Its possible that we could perceive something as a myth based on it not working for us and our conditions.

I have given up with leeks,Allium leaf miner was first found not that far down the motorway from me it also gets my onions & garlic,never touches my wild garlic (ransomes) though & to date has not affected my three pointed leeks either

In your opinion indeed. I find it works better for me having tried both ways. It may be a myth for you but not me. Your opinion does not make puddling a myth to anybody other than yourself. There are several ways to skin a cat, and several to plant leeks. I grow ruddy good leeks, puddling works well for me.

Pigletwillie, you have spent a lot of time constantly arguing with every thing I say. If I said something was black I am sure you would say it is white. You are quite obviously trying to provoke me but it wont work. I am bored with leeks so puddle away, life is too short.

Yes please do, I guess they will find another area to harass me in, but it aint gonna work. hard to understand how some people can be so malicious. They got one of my favourite persons on the vine (Big Mally) but I am too stupid to be intimidated.
