LinkedIn - is it worth it?

As Hubby's is a new business, naturally I'm keen to take advantage of free advertising. But, we are a 'local' business, in a service industry, so I don't want enquiries from all over the country.

I keep getting emails asking me to join, but haven't heard good or bad. I would appreciate any input. Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

For my industry (pharmaceuticals), LinkedIn is the business version of Facebook. I would recommend it, but it does depend on how much your industry use it. I'd make a free profile and see if you can see any potential clients and competitors.

I keep getting an email from a very distant acquaintance saying that he'd like to add me to his professional network on LinkedIn. I haven't a clue what that means but I don't think I want to accept.

My requests either come from my Dad, who is retired, which I don't understand. Most of the others come from someone I've never heard of! I've always just deleted them in the past, but today, I decided to investigate. First stop, here!

I was linked in in my old job .........never used it but I think if your a corporate go getter it could maybe have its uses......but I think its a load of corporate tosh

Do you get "brownie points" the more contacts you have on Linkedin?

You get no points at all; but you do get endorsements for other people to say that they think you are good at stuff. I spend very little time on it; however I do laugh at some of the people I have worked with who couldn't run a preverbial knees up in a gym; endorsed by other chocolate teapot types for skills they couldn't achieve in a million years. If you are being interviewed for jobs though - it does help to be on there and have some decent connections.

Really depends on what industry you are in I think and how much you intend to use it... I am on it and have been offered a few interviews etc thru it.... Whilst it can be used to generate business, a lot of people ( as Zaz says) use it mainly to build up their personal profile to further their career...

Well to me it isn't much trouble to set it up initially.... But it is who views it and who you then link to that will determine levels of business etc I'd say... It's not that time consuming so if it gets you even a small bit odd of extra business, it will have been worth it...

Someone was talking about it at a leaving do we went to a while ago - and basically said just endorse each other for as many skills as possible ... Sort of makes me think it's even more of a complete waste of time than I thought...
