Car tyres - daft question!

I need a new front tyre cos the tread's worn. I assume I should have 2 new tyres on the front for safety. Can I buy one new tyre and put the brand new spare on the front and have the still usable old front tyre as a spare?
I'd like to know what you would do - as I'm sure the garage will want to sell me 2 new tyres.

That's what I would do but you may have to get the spare balanced when you buy your new one.
Edit: Double check your spare is not a safety tyre which is a lot narrower than your car tyre.

The new car I have just ordered does not come with a spare. It comes with a compressor & a bottle of gunk.

I'm only getting rid of my jinx because well, it's been a jinx from day one. Plus I've never had a brand new car.

I think they are actually called emergency tyres but I could not remember the proper name. New car manufactures do not supply spares now, something to do with fuel savings.
