Yep we'll be doing it as usual. The kids will cheat as usual by having their electricals on charge up to the last minute Me and the OH will play cards in candle-light and make toast on the open fire, just because, then he'll stub his toes on something on the way to the loo/kitchen/to answer the door and moan about 'Why are we doing this?!', and then it'll be over for another year...

Last year I stubbed my toe on the loft ladder (my attic hates me, it'll do anything to get me out and keep me out) groping around in the semi darkness.

Oh yeah, and Max down the road? Her elderly neighbour called the police when she saw Max's husband going round with a torch. She thought they had gone out and were being burgled......

I will do it again, but this year I'll be sat typing by the light of my lappy screen!

Although having done it for two solid years when we were off grid I may not bother until 2743.

I understand the importance of the gesture but I do not think it is extreme enough to make others want or need to join in.

Perhaps if we had EARTH WEEK.......with the take up building up over a week to a BIG SWITCH OFF on one night.......the momentum and message could be stronger and the 24 hour news reporting we love would ensure a much greater take up. Plus we would use less leccy for the week and send a greater message to the utility companies to stop taking the p...s!

I like earth hour - every year I roost upstairs and either read by candlelight or play on my laptop (using the battery for a change). A cosy hour for me.

I think we forgot last year. My daughter usually reminds me. Unfortunately my laptop battery is cactus and won't last that long. Half the appliances in the house don't seem to be working so I'm usually doing my bit 24/7.

I had completely forgotten about this. The issue of climate change is foremost in my mind for much of the time anyway, so my main aim for this year is to copy a neighbour down the street who has bought a couple of solar panels, mounted them in a window, and now charges up batteries and/or powers his computer etc with them. Not a save all, but a lot better than nothing.
I may well be asleep in bed, but if not I will endeavour to teach my neighbour and her kids to play Bananagrams by torchlight instead of with blaring TV as is usual.
Hmm...I feel a shadow puppet show coming on...some ghost stories...

I never think that this is particularly well publicised, hadn't heard about it this year at all. Having said that, of the people I know that do observe it a large percentage of them just seem to turn off their lights and still use electrical devices throughout which I think is rather missing the point, even if they are on rechargeable batteries, I thought the idea was to a) save energy and b) think about it all.
