Action on Fuel Prices

So the AA has revealed fuel prices have gone up by 5p per litre in less than a month. Revealed?? Do they think we haven't noticed?

High time the consumer kicked back. A prolongued boycott on all filling stations of a specific firm could force them to reduce prices to generate sales. Once that firm's Fuel has been reduced in price, a boycott of the next firm's filling stations should also yield results. And so on.

Since T@@co hiked its fuel prices, our local store has been dead. No queues at the tills. Their attempt to profit from fuel is hitting them in the store. Consumers have the power to vote with Their feet. Maybe we should be doing it. The Fuel Companies and the supermarkets have had it their own way for too long.

There's a Fuel Action Group asking for votes on whether you'd prefer a 10p income tax band or a reduction of 14p a litre on fuel duty.

interesting VC but it doesn't bring the Fuel companies to heel. A reduction in duty just fuels the price hikes as the Fuel companies have done in the past.

I'm not proposing anything difficult to achieve. if for instance everyone boycotts one specific companies filling stations until they drop their prices. After that perhaps just the threat of a boycott of the other companies could be enough to achieve a result. The consumer isn't hurting themselves, they just fill up elsewhere. Despite denials, it seems to me that the oil companies operate price fixing cartels. Best way to sort that out is to divide and rule by targeting

The other problem is speculation on the oil markets.
Speculators "bet" on the price of oil and it artificially inflates the price.
This is something that needs to stop.

Fuel duty and vat should be reduced.
If fuel price fell then more people would buy fuel thus recouping the lost revenue.

I am sorry but all this thread demonstrates is an ignorance of oil prices and exchange rates... If the pound� falls against the US$ or the EUR , oil prices in the UK rise and hence petrol and diesel prices rise - much of our diesel is imported.

One small point "IF" the government reduced fuel duty on petrol & diesel where would it get it's income from?

More tax on alcohol,tobacco,VAT,corporation tax, income tax or some other tax or cut spending even further.?

The prolem for us is that the local station (independent I think) is more expensive than the next nearest which is one of the big supermarkets In avoiding one I end up paying about 5p per ltr more. The local prices went up 7p in a month.

I'm fully aware of oil prices and exchange rates thank you very much and of the effect they should have on the price at the pumps. I'm also extremely aware how pump prices are hiked quickly when prices rise and reduced slowly when prices fall. I'm also keenly aware of the obscene profits posted by the oil companies which continue to rise while the rest of us are being squeezed hard on all sides.

The government should tax people on the amount of children that they have with the amount of tax being proportionately higher for each child. This might even help slightly with over-population, the worlds biggest problem.

I can see the merits of your suggestion,but wonder if the fuel price is proportionately lower in China where there was a government imposed maximum number of children per household

That's a much better way of doing something about it - is you're still driving your vehicle as much then you'll still be buying petrol from somewhere but by actually reducing what you need by using other modes of transport, lift sharing or generally driving more economically then it's surprising how much difference it can make.
