  • Home made compost 1941

I know that from time to time we get questions on here about making compost.
This film from 1941 is on the BFI site and is one i think many new gardeners will find useful.

I thought it was for forcing rhubarb but according to the comments its a clamp for storing vegetables.

I liked his clothing - the image of an allotment gardener. Flat cap, waistcoat, cigarette, just like my grandad

I've got an old gardening book called 'the ABC of vegetable gardening' first printed in 1937 and in that you're not properly dressed unless you're wearing plus 4s

Could it be a bee skep, or a rhubarb cloche?

He was putting good beans on that compost.....doesn't he know there's a war on? He does use the compost - he uses it to build a whole new compost heap.

There's something just not quite right about that film. The lighting? Can't quite put my finger on it.

It all looks so staged - just too perfect to be true
