Irons and I fell out when I fell over - and broke my wrist about 6 years ago. Couldn't iron and realised that I didn't need to iron. No more work, no more smart clothes, just scruffing around! My ironing board makes a wonderful home for spiders.

For the first 8 years of being married we had a twin tub washing machine so I'd say my automatic is the best thing ever closely followed by the hoover.

Oooh, just when you think you might have enough gadgets, another one comes along. I'm not sure whether to say 'thanks' or 'argh!' PN

I don't consider things like washing machines gadgets, so I would say my favourite non essential is my Kenwood Chef. It's a fabulous orange one from the 70s, not just useful but beautiful too

For me its my new Lakeland stick blender....love it, also comes in a neat bag do I dont have to rummage in cupboards for hours looking for bits to fit it! My second thing, though I use it as little as possible is my steam press. I hate ironing to, with this i just lay it on the board and bring the top bard down and its done! NOt Perfectly but its done! And Im a saddo that likes a crisp bed sheet to crawl in to!

I have to say mine is my vacuum sealer. I am a bit evangelistic about it but it has saved me so much room in the freezer and it closes crisp packets, rice and pasta packets and I love it and want to have it's babies. We bought this one on a whim at the supermarket but I have since bought one for my Mum and it does the same job for a third of the price.

My other "must have" is a dehydrator. I have saved a fortune in dried apple slices, "sun" dried tomatoes and doggie treats.

I'd go with the knife sharpener, I've got a very similar one, but mine also has a second 'groove' for sharpening scissors... very useful, occasionally.
The other 'gadget' that I find saves a lot of time is the Hachoir, which makes chopping garlic, chillies, ginger or herbs SO easy, without the mess to clean up of doing small amounts in the blender. I also have a Ulu knife, which is greatly superior for cutting raw meat or fish compared to a normal knife with a long handle (the Ulu has the handle at the back of the curved blade) but I sometimes wish it was a bit bigger!

Tumble dry, fold while hot. I iron once a month for Jez's work shirts, if I can be arrised. If not he does them himself. I grew up watching my mum being a slave to ironing everything in sight, and point blank refuse to do the same. No-one dies if their shirt is a bit creased I find

I concur with Seahorse on the Kenwood Chef front though, wouldn't like to be without mine now. I am suffering horribly with the breakdown of my dishwasher though I hate, hate, hate washing dishes. Makes the skin fall off my hands, and my back hurt

last year i had bother with the kenwood,just the baisic one,anyhow,son gave mr their big one,complete with tatty scraper,tin opener,grater,mincer,and blender jug,they rarely used it,all the add ons were still in the boxes unused,soo soo handy,the most used are the tin opener,permenantly attatched,and the tatty scraper,brilliant thing,every gadget has been used,just try and take it away from me

My best "toy" (its a bit big to be a gadget) is my industrial strength garden shredder - i love it!

I also love my fish kettle (we both fish, so we have a lot of largish trout) and my slow cooker.

Never iron, don't like food processors cos of all the fiddling and washing up, and I use my hostess trolley for drying stuff.

Actually I most like edwardian style gadgets that are mechanical rather than electrical, and much to the OH's disgust started watching the Edwardian Farm AGAIN last night.....
