Latham's is an OK ... but does have quite a mish-mash of grain in it.

I'm just wondering what the reason would be? Dogs are omnivorous, so surely a greater mix of ingredients would be more natural for them?
(though for sure they wouldn't be eating rice in the wild). I'd been considering a BARF diet when she's older, but that might be a step too far for me, too much additional work

2Sheds before the bad news. I have just re-read the complete thread and have to say I personally think you are doing all you can at this time and doing it correctly. She will get there its just a question of time and one day you will smile about all the fuss.

And yes I do indeed feel your pain I once trained a springer as a hunter/retriever 2 years of pain. Then it suddenly clicked and I had the most wonderful dog.

Now the bad news Kiki my kennel breed Akita. It took 18 weeks to toilet train her and a 91/2 stone dog makes a lot of poo. Was she worth it YES I had her for nine great years until cancer took her.

Settle in for the long haul, keep doing what you are doing, then it may just happen sooner than you expect.

The majority of commercially available Dog food is full of kibble/cereal - this is a filler and we have to feed them more of it to satisfy them. In addition to this, the dog then produces more waste. More natural foods take less to fill/satisfy and produce less waste. Remember years ago when dog poo was white and crumbly after a few days? It disappeared/decomposed relatively quickly when compared to today's rubbish-laden samples. As soon as I replaced one of my dog's feeds with raw meat (4 chicken wings for breakfast/James W3llbel0ved dog food for tea), the amount of waste he produced dropped by fifty per cent!

The two I'm dog-sitting at the moment, are fed on supermarket own-brand dried food, and they sh*t for England! Yes JW and Ard3n Gr@nge are more expensive, but there's less poo to pick up, and you need to feed less. I don't eat rubbish, and I'm not going to fed it to my dog.

good luck with whatever you decide to do. Don't be like me and give up halfway through training a dog because it's just too much hassle to teach her not to eat the cats......the cats then lived upstairs, and she lived down....

Oh dear, TS - i've just googled around, and in 15+ sites, every single one said that french bulldogs are notoriously hard to toilet train. Apparently the females are worse than the males, the bladder has a maximum time/capacity of 2 hours, stretching to 3 as an adult, and training can often last 12 months or more before the dog is reliably clean.

I guess you've picked yourself the challenge of the year!

Not sure if this has been mentioned as can't read through all the posts.

I had a dog who was a nightmare to train. He would only go on newspaper. We had to move the paper gradually towards to door then outside, then I would take the paper on the walk with me and when he did the poo I'd use a trigger word. Eventually we got rid of the paper and he would go normally.

So, you good people, help me out with this one.

I have a new puppy, been with me 2 and a half weeks now. She's quite an old pup: 8 months. The breeder had kept her in a crate, where she did her toilets. So: she's been trained to poop indoors, effectively.

I need her to poop outdoors. I am sick & fed up of cleaning dog pee & poop out of the carpets.

I've read loads of books, loads of internet sites, and I'm doing all the "right" things:

- taking her out as often as poss
- praising & giving treats when she "goes" in the right place (outside)
- not punishing her for accidents
- keeping her in a small crate, because apparently they won't soil their bed (she didn't read that memo though)
- feeding her in the crate, because apparently they won't soil near their food (she didn't read that memo either)

I've kept a toilet diary since day one, to try to see any pattern: there is none.

She will go first thing (I've had to start getting up at 6am to take her out) and sometimes last thing (I set my alarm for 11pm). She's meant to go after meals (not always) or after play (not always).

Some days she'll poo twice, other days 5 times. She'll wee once an hour, or 3 times in ten mins. The vet's checked her over, and nothing's wrong. She's just not "getting it".

Today, for instance, she went at 6am, then I took her out every hour until I went to work at 11am. I came home at 1pm to find the living room stinking, and dog poop everywhere - she'd pood in her bed, then laid/stood/walked in it, and spread it all up the bars of the crate and through the bars onto the carpet.

The weather is against me: since I got her it's been cold wet and windy, and she simply won't go, even if I tie her up in the garden or take her out every hour.

So, wit's end.

Any (sensible) suggestions, please?

Yep, I agree with you. I really meant 'is Lathams a bad food' ~ I checked the ingredients and it seems like a good one to me

That would explain a lot then. She will have a pee every time I take her out, even if that's every 20 mins. Sometimes she pees 3 times in one trip.

I gave a raw chicken wing to Star (the tough staffie) ~ she had a sniff, wouldn't eat it.

I can't afford to buy organic chicken* for the dog every day, she might have one as a treat though

It's on a par with the others at the better end of the scale, I think. You can usually tell by the price but not always.

With many dogs, mine included, you have to feed what they will happily eat, especially when they are still growing. My Parents' Goldie will eat anything and everything you put in front of her, she really is a guts. However, she suffers from a sensitive tummy, so they have to monitor her closely. Mine doesn't particularly like dry dog food, but I won't feed tinned. My chicken wings come from my butcher, who doesn't sell 'shite' but it certainly isn't organically reared, sadly.

I use Burns Dog food. Most of the ingredients are organically grown within a few miles of where I live.

Not heard of that one, I'll have a look at the price (my local pet store sells it).

I will be making her dinners myself though when I get a bit more time, and it's certainly achievable, looking at the ingredients:

"Free Range Egg (Min 20%), Organic Brown Rice (Min 20%), Seasonal Vegetables (Min 20%)"
