So, whilst I've got a drill that works really well - I need to go out and buy a piece of copper pipe ..... hum, we've come full circle from chucking stuff away
Right, not the type of trug I was imagining so ignore my repair suggestion above. I would make a couple of triangular "plates" for each side from plywood or similar. Fix these on either side of the trug, flat of the triangle to the top, with the fabric of the trug in a sandwich held together with small nuts and bolts. Drill two larger holes through the top of the triangle and use a piece of rope through the holes and knotted at the ends as handles. (It's raining so passing the time doing imaginary jobs)
Bearing in mind the material these flexi tubs are made of, I'd be very wary of trying to use heated copper tubing to make holes. There's a distinct possibility of dangerous noxious fumes being created.
Jules - that picture made me laugh. If there is a box/trug/bag my cat will get in it, but try and get it in a cat carrier to take it to the vets, no chance.
