Dogs and gardens...

is it ever a good combination??
Spent today pottering in my lil' garden and watching the dogs cause mayhem! First I tell Chi 2 and 3 off for chewing on my blackcurrant and the new growth on my blueberry. Then I find Chi 1 standing in the trough of compost I just filled up. Back inside to get some seeds and come out to find Chi 2 has rummaged through the pile of twigs waiting to be bagged up and strewn them everywhere and Chi 1 is now in the coldframe!!(it wasnt open but its a blowaway and he wriggled under the bottom)...
*sigh*
For now anything planted has its own little fence round it. Its like Colditz for plants! Im hoping once things are established they will be safe from evil little ratdogs...

Anyone else have 'fun' keeping a happy dog and decent garden???

2 large Boxers who:
prefer to toilet in my veg patch than the rest of the HUGE garden...
like to copy mummy, so when I'm digging, they like to join in, usually in the middle of the lawn
steal apples and plums from the tree and the ground, making themselves ill
steal plantpots/canes/small tools when I'm working

our visiting puppy liked to chew cane toppers. he'd very neatly take them off the top of the cane and won't stand on the plants to do it. he's gradually learning that the lawn is fine but not allowed on the flower beds! fortunately he's never been a digger but generally i make more "mistakes" and dig up/tread on plants than he does

Get a cat! Lilly the cat does tend to roll on the newly tilthed soil, but she does keep the mice of the pea and been seeds and out of things you don't want 'em in!

I had a GS that used to eat my plastic watering cans (he hated them because I used them to bath him). My daughter's dog now chews up any plant pot he can find. All good fun.

My staffie eats raspberries and plums straight off the canes / tree. She prunes my shrubs for me, and runs off with almost anything she can get hold of. She too hates watering cans. I think her favourite chewing toys are brushes (hairbrushes, paintbrushes, dustpan brushes)

Don't have 3 little dogs have 1 big one, they can't wriggle through or under stuff. They can chew though.

Jake has turned my lawn into a running track with banking each end, devoured a latex glove , taken numerous plants in pots for a run round the garden , trampled plants into non-existence, pulled out the cherry tree (well it was dead anyway) pinches apples off the tree , and crunched up numerous plant pots, trays etc.....He knows he's not allowed on the garden and he's certainly not allowed in the gh he's nearly 8 years old and behaves like he's 8 months but in his favour he ignores the birds ......

My two are too laid back to run anywhere - I wonder where they get it from Their worst trait is sleeping on the seedlings in the greenhouse but a stairgate across the greenhouse door keeps them out now. They eat any raspberries and blackberries they can reach and all the green figs that fall on the ground. Seems to have no effect on their digestion whatsoever. They also eat all the veg peelings and leftovers that would otherwise go in the compost bin. It would be a soulless garden without them!

Jake ate an eggshell that got dropped on its way to the compost bin today .........good job I haven't got hens I'd probably never get any eggs .

I except I should be grateful then that my lot are confined to levels of destruction lower then 18inches!! Also that they have never met a fruit or vegetable they actually liked!

Our previous dog used to eat the tomatoes as soon as they ripened .......
